The Longest Day

Nach einigen Rückschlägen und Schwierigkeiten hinsichtlich der Organisation habe ich mich dazu entschlossen, den Lauf auf den Sommer 2011 zu verschieben. Ich werde versuchen, für die Organisation professionelle Hilfe zu verpflichten und auch Unterstützung von lokalen Vereinen und der Deutschen Ultramarathonverinigung DUV zu bekommen. Es hat sich einfach gezeigt, dass die Organisation und Durchführung alleine nicht oder nur suboptimal zu bewältigen sind. Da auf dieser Strecke schon der kleinste Fehler das vorzeitige Aus bedeuten kann, ist es nicht ratsam das zu riskieren.

After some difficulties and setbacks concerning the organization i decided to postpone the run until the summer of 2011. I will try to enlist professional help for the organization and to get support from local clubs and the German Ultramarathon Association (DUV). The last couple of months have shown that all the work that had to be done could not be done by a single person alone, the results would have been just not optimal. Since even the smallest mistake in an event like this can mean a premature end, it seemed not advisable to risk that.

Der Deutsche Kinderhospizverein e.V.

Da die Zusammenarbeit zwischen dem „Deutschen Kinderhospizverein e.V.“ und „The Longest Day“ nun offiziell ist, hier ein paar grundlegende Informationen zu dem Verein.

Der Deutsche Kinderhospizverein e.V. wurde 1990 von 6 Familien gegründet, deren Kinder unheilbare, lebensverkürzende Krankheiten haben. Der Verein arbeitet bundesweit und begleitet die ganze Familie ab der Diagnose des Kindes. Dabei gibt es Angebote sowohl für das kranke Kind, als auch für Eltern und Geschwister.

Hauptanliegen ist die Begleitung der betroffenen Familien. Dazu bieten wir ein Netz von betroffenen Familien, mit Anlaufstellen an verschiedenen Orten in Deutschland. Wir initiieren und stärken die Selbsthilfe unter den Familien. Gleichzeitig vertreten wir die Interessen der Familien und arbeiten an der Verbesserung der Versorgungsstrukturen in Deutschland – ambulant und stationär.

The German Children Hospice Association

As the cooperation between the “German Children Hospice Association” now is official, here are some basic infos about the association.

The „Deutsche Kinderhospicverein e.V.“ (“German Children Hospice Association”) was founded in 1190 by six families, whose children suffered from incurable, life-shortening diseases. The association works nationwide and attends the whole family from the moment the child is diagnosed. In doing this both the child as well as the parents and the siblings.

To help the affected families, the association relies on a network of such families, with contacts in several places in Germany, to aid the families in supporting each other. Another focus is to take care of the families’ interests and insuring the quality of care – both ambulant and stationary.

I’ve also set up a group on facebook and also a little something on twitter so you people can follow my every move. So go spread the word. This is not only a fascinating mission i put myself on, but this is also for charity. Any money coming in will be donated to german children hospices. Reason enough?

Es gibt nun auch eine Gruppe zu dem Lauf auf facebook und auch eine Kleinigkeit auf twitter sodass man jeder meiner Aktivitäten folgen kann. Also gebt es weiter. Dies ist nicht nur eine faszinierende Angelegenheit für mich, es ist auch für einen guten Zweck. Jegliches Geld, das herein kommt, wird an deutsche Kinder-Hospize gespendet. Grund genug?

I am quite happy to say that the German Sport University Of Cologne will be providing medical support for “The longest day”. I spoke to Dr. Georgina Monteil and now she and the institute’s head are discussing what kind of support they can offer. In an event like this it will be necessary to have a doctor on the scene all the way since at some point sleep deprivation will make you hallucinate and all sorts of more or less funny things can happen. So at some point i’m sure i won’t be able to make the right decision. Well, that happened to me before but it could never been as hazardous to my health like this one. So when i start babbling, i’d like to leave it to the pros …

Es freut mich bekannt geben zu können, dass die Deutsche Sporthochschule Köln die medizinische Betreuung für “Der längste Tag” übernehmen will. Ich habe mit Dr. Georgina Monteil gesprochen und sie berät sich mit dem INstitutsleiter welche Art der Unterstützung sie leisten können. Bei einem solchen Event wird es nötig sein, einen Arzt permanent vor Ort zu haben, da es in Folge des Schlafentzuges irgednwann zu Halluzinationen kommen kann und eine Reihe von mehr oder weniger angenehmen Dingen geschehen kann. Das wäre nicht das erste Mal für mich, aber diesmal kann das wirklich gefährlich für die Gesundheit werden. Wenn ich also anfange unverständliches Zeug zu reden, überlasse ich es lieber den Profis …
